Potluck Cake

1 c. dates
1 c. boiling water
2 eggs
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
dash of salt
1 Tbsp. cocoa
1 c. chocolate chips
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Soak dates in boiling water. Beat eggs, shortening and sugar together. Beat dates and water into creamed mixture. Stir dry ingredients together with one half of the chocolate chips. Add to cake mixture. Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch pan. Top with nuts and rest of chocolate chips. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees. (Makes its own frosting.)
