Texas Bars

1 German Chocolate Cake Mix
1 stick melted butter
14 oz. package caramels
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
2/3 cup evaporated milk (divided)
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional) 

Unwrap caramels and add 1/3 cup of evaporated milk.  Melt in the microwave, stirring after each minute. 

Mix dry cake mix, butter, and 1/3 cup of evaporated milk and nuts.  Mix, pat about 3/4 of cake mixture in floured 9x13 pan.  Bake 6 minutes at 350 degrees -- no longer.  Sprinkle chocolate chips over cake and pour caramel mixture over chips.  Spread (as best you can) remaining cake mixture over caramels.  Bake 18 minutes at 350 degrees.  Cool and cut into squares.
