Kryptonite Brownies
6 squares (1 oz. each) unsweetened chocolate
1 C. + 2 T. butter (no substitutes), divided
3 C. sugar
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk, divided
1-1/2 t. vanilla
1-1/2 C. flour
1-1/2 t. cinnamon, divided
1 C. semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 C. packed brown sugar
35 caramels
1 C. English toffee bits
nonstick spray
In a microwave safe bowl, combine unsweetened chocolate &
1 C. butter. Microwave, uncovered, on high for 30 second intervals, stirring
between, until chocolate is melted & mixture is smooth (1-1/2 to 2 minutes).
In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar & melted chocolate mixture. Add eggs;
mix well. Add 1/2 C. condensed milk & vanilla. Combine the flour & 1 t.
cinnamon; stir into chocolate mixture until just combined. Stir in chocolate
chips. Remove 2 C. batter; set aside. Transfer remaining batter to a
13x9x2" baking pan that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.
In a small heavy saucepan, melt remaining butter. Stir in brown sugar &
remaining condensed milk. Add caramels; cook & stir until caramels are
melted & mixture is smooth. Stir in remaining cinnamon. Spoon mixture over
batter in pan; top with toffee bits. Drop reserved batter by tablespoonfuls over
caramel & toffee bits. Bake at 350° for 45-55 minutes, or until a
toothpick near canter comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack; cut into bars.
Yield: 2-/12 to 3 dozen bars.
